Now What? Get Hired After Attending A Career Fair

The thought of meeting a prospective employer for the first time can be daunting but thinking ahead and making sure to have a follow up plan is key.

If you attended HACE’s Virtual Career Fair, where you had seamless, 1-on-1 access to recruiters from over 20 companies nationwide, congratulations! This was a fabulous first move. If you've been wondering the best ways to leverage any connections you may have made, recruitment specialist, Emmanuel Lopez  shared great tips during a post workshop.

Our favorite takeaways:

  1. Understanding the “Applicant Funnel” Concept for scoring the job. For anyone who wants to know how going from applicant status to getting hired works, grasping this concept can paint a clear picture and motivate you to get through the funnel from the bottom to the top.

  2. Being Proactive and Reaching Out. If you spoke 1-on-1 with recruiters, reach out and connect with them. There is nothing that stands out more than a prospect following up after saying they would.

  3. Know the “Why”. Choosing a job is easy but knowing why you want it is a crucial question to ponder. This is also a question that most frequently comes up during the interview process. Dig into research and find out about the company you are applying for. Knowledge is power.
  4. Tailor Your Resume to the Job. After discovering why you want to work there, tailor your resume accordingly. This will show your relatability to the company even if you don’t have the job-specific skills. Remember to apply your transferrable skills to what they are looking for in the job description.
  5. Why LinkedIn? Aside from it being one of the easiest ways to interact and build your network, it also gives you the visibility to be seen. Make your presence known with a professional headshot and a virtual resume. You also can expand on your visibility by being proactive and reactive, such as with people who have similar job interests and with those professionals already in your desired field.

It’s never too early or too late to take those next steps. Visit out Career Center and get started today!
